The 4 things we all need

I’ve discovered that there are 4 things that we all need in order to resolve and prevent conflict and create the quality of relationships we want – at home and at work.

Over the past 20 years I’ve taught these skills in one-on-one sessions with individuals and “pairs” – for example couples, or parents and their children (especially teens and adult children). I still recommend this when possible because it can be scheduled when it works best for you, and it is definitely the way to make the fastest progress and get the benefits sooner.

But building and sustaining the necessary habits to have good, long-lasting relationships takes ongoing support and reinforcement, and many people who would like to benefit from these skills haven’t been able to afford that.

Therefore, for the first time in over 20 years, from fall 2023 through spring 2024 I am experimenting with offering group courses, as well as individual and “pair” support, on all 4 of these topics. More details about each course (offered via Zoom) are available below.

1. How to recover, heal and learn from frustrating or painful interactions

…Including how to heal guilt, shame, self-criticism, and self-blame. This is the first and most vital skill for satisfying relationships. If you only work with me on one topic, I recommend that this be the one. Again, I teach this via private one-on-one sessions and, this year, in a group program.

2. How to talk about what you want and make decisions with others that work for both of you – Peaceful conflict resolution and prevention

Includes a conversation “roadmap” plus how to prepare for conversations so others will truly hear you and want to make a decision that works for you. We’ll also cover how to deal with broken agreements – when someone doesn’t do what they said they’d do. Recommended: That you have studied “1. How to recover” with me first before you take this course, because it will give you access to the brain resources you need to talk in a connecting way with others.

3. The 9 communication habits of successful relationships

A key realization I’ve come to over the past four years is that how we communicate is essentially a set of habits. And the default habits built into the human race were designed to keep us safe from physical danger; they do not serve us well in the complexity of modern relationships. In this series, I’ll share the key day-to-day habits that are vital to positive and long-lasting relationships – at work and at home – and how you can customize them to work for your unique style.

4. Grow Your Skills — Monthly Group Program

Once you understand the steps in the first two topics, the key to improving the day-to-day quality and satisfaction in your relationships is ongoing practice, support and reinforcement. I’ve learned that we just can’t grow these particular skills on our own; we need support and guidance from someone who has more experience with them. I offer this to private clients in one-on-one and joint sessions, and in a monthly group program.

The once-a-month group program begins in mid-September and runs through May.

This ongoing group program offers you a safe and supportive space to practice these new skills until they become natural, while receiving expert advice and support. A maximum of 6 participants will meet twice a month by phone and/or computer so you can participate from the comfort of your own home or office.
